Convicted double killer found dead in Californa prison at Corcoran; cellmate detained

CORCORAN, California — A convicted double murderer has died at a Central California prison and his cellmate is being held as a suspect in his death.

Corrections officials say 51-year-old Rufus Hodges was declared dead Monday morning after being found in his cell at the state prison in Corcoran.

The cause of his death hasn't been determined but authorities say 35-year-old Christopher Shirley has been detained in a holding cell.

Hodges had been in Corcoran for two years. He was serving a life sentence without chance of parole for two Riverside County killings.

Shirley is serving more than 46 years on Shasta County convictions for assault with a semi-automatic weapon and inflicting great bodily harm on a child under age 5.
