RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Riverside County officials have rejected a proposed rock quarry near Temecula but critics say they've left the door open for a scaled-down version of the massive project.
The Riverside Press-Enterprise (http://bit.ly/LQ3Rre ) says county supervisors on Tuesday finalized their February denial of the project. However, they also certified the quarry's environmental impact report.
Temecula City Attorney Peter Thorson says that allows the developer to come back within three years with a new quarry application.
The proposed Liberty Quarry would create 1,000-foot-deep pit on a mountain, producing up to 5 million tons of sand and gravel for construction projects.
Critics argued it would create air quality problems, destroy a sacred Native American site and damage tourism.
