POTSDAM, New York — Authorities say a man is in critical condition after being hit by a freight train in northern New York.

The St. Lawrence County Sheriff's Office tells WWNY-TV in Watertown (http://bit.ly/14n6FGb ) that when deputies arrived on the scene late Sunday night they found 45-year-old Kevin Seig on the railroad bed in the town of Potsdam, near where he lives.

Deputies say he suffered severe head and internal injuries. He was taken to the Potsdam airport then flown by helicopter to Upstate Medical University in Syracuse.

Officials say the CSX train stopped after the accident.
