Virginia Beach man faces up to 45 years in prison in death of 14-month-old daughter

VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia — A Virginia Beach man faces up to 45 years in prison on charges stemming from the death of his 14-month-old daughter.

An Aug. 5 sentencing is set for 25-year-old Marcus Dewayne Brantley.

Media outlets report that Brantley pleaded guilty Monday in Virginia Beach Circuit Court to second-degree murder and child endangerment.

According to court documents, Brantley told police that his daughter, Melanie, fell and hit her head on Aug. 15, 2012. Two days later, the child died at a hospital.

An autopsy found that the girl had brain and eye hemorrhages, skull and rib fractures, and iron buildup in several organs.
