SHEBOYGAN, Wisconsin — The two teenage Wisconsin boys accused of killing one of their great-grandmothers have given widely varying accounts of the murder.
Fourteen-year-old Nathan Paape (pahp) of Sheboygan took the witness stand in his own defense Wednesday. Paape testified that it was his friend, Antonio Barbeau (bar-BOH'), who proposed robbing and killing Barbeau's great-grandmother, 78-year-old Barbara Olson.
Sheboygan Press Media reports Paape also claimed he only struck Olson twice with a hammer out of fear Barbeau would turn on him.
Barbeau testified Wednesday he had a hatchet and Paape had a hammer and that they hit Olson numerous times.
WTMJ-TV reports Barbeau testified the two went to Olson's home after discussing ways to get some money. Barbeau has pleaded no contest in Olson's death.
Closing arguments in Paape's trial are scheduled Thursday.
