Arrest ends brief Des Moines standoff; incident began with neighborhood dispute, police say

DES MOINES, Iowa — The uneventful arrest of a 47-year-old Des Moines man has ended a brief standoff.

Police had been sent to an apartment complex a little after 11 p.m. Saturday.

Witnesses told officers say a man had been yelling threats and had thrown items off his balcony. They also say they feared he had a gun in a bag he'd pointed at them when he made threats to kill them.

A special law enforcement unit was called to the scene, and a negotiator was able to talk to the man through his apartment door. He soon gave up.

Police say no gun was found in the apartment.

The man was identified as Scott Sowka. Jail records say he remained in custody on Monday. Online court records don't yet list the case.
