Police: Woman killed in Charlotte shooting after 71-year-old man accused her of stealing money

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina — Authorities say an argument over money has led to a fatal shooting in Charlotte.

Police say 71-year-old Joe Maddox shot and killed 51-year-old Diane Burns around 1:30 p.m. Saturday in west Charlotte.

Witnesses told police the suspect accused the victim of taking his money. They argued, and police say Maddox shot and killed Burns.

Investigators say Maddox then went inside his home and refused to come out when the first officers arrived. He surrendered peacefully when the SWAT team showed up.

Maddox is charged with murder. He remains in jail and it wasn't known if he had a lawyer.
