Coast Guard plans hearings on new Interstate 5 bridge across Columbia River

PORTLAND, Oregon — The U.S. Coast Guard plans public hearings on the proposed $3 billion Interstate 5 bridge across the Columbia River, which some say would be too low.

The hearings announced Tuesday will be June 4 in Portland and June 5 in Vancouver.

After upstream manufacturers complained it was too low for their products and the Coast Guard agreed, bridge designers added clearance. The Coast Guard is reviewing the design.

In another bridge development, the Vancouver City Council voted 5-2 Monday not to put an initiative opposing light-rail on the November ballot. It was proposed by opponents of extending Portland's system on the new bridge.

The Columbian reported (http://bit.ly/16UiNSn ) the city attorney said the initiative went too far in limiting city functions. The opponents said they would sue.
