Not guilty pleas entered in Atlanta cheating case; trial set for May 2014

ATLANTA — Former Atlanta Public Schools Superintendent Beverly Hall has waived her arraignment on charges alleging a broad conspiracy to cheat on standardized tests to mask poor student performance for personal gain.

A not guilty plea was entered on her behalf by the court during Friday's hearing.

Hall's attorneys have promised to mount a strong defense, saying Hall was not aware of or involved in any cheating. Also Friday, Fulton Superior Court Judge Jerry Baxter set a trial date for May 5, 2014.

A grand jury in March indicted Hall and 34 other educators, accusing them of involvement in a conspiracy to cheat, conceal cheating or retaliate against whistleblowers.

Several other educators appeared in court and not guilty pleas were entered on their behalf.
