Investigation underway after man dies in upstate apartment fire


OSWEGO, New York — A 63-year-old man is dead following an apartment fire in upstate New York.

The Post-Standard of Syracuse reports ( ) that authorities identified the man as Terry Lee Phillips of Oswego.

Fire crews responded to Phillips' building late Wednesday night after a resident smelled smoke.

Firefighters helped one person out of the multifamily structure, and other residents were able to leave on their own.

WSTM-TV reports firefighters found Phillips in his upstairs apartment, which was fully engulfed when they arrived. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
