Pedestrian walking on Lewes, Delaware, road struck, killed

LEWES, Delaware — Delaware State Police say a man walking in a road in the dark was struck and killed in Lewes.

It happened about 5:50 a.m. Wednesday on John J. Williams Highway. Troopers say 75-year-old William McCafferty of Lewes was walking in the traffic lane.

McCafferty was hit by a van driven by 36-year-old Jason Jewell of Seaford. Police say McCafferty was thrown onto the road and pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash is under investigation.
