NORFOLK, Virginia — A state official says Elizabeth River Crossings should waive tolls from two Hampton Roads tunnels that haven't been billed within 60 days.

Secretary of Transportation Aubrey Lane tells The Virginian-Pilot (http://bit.ly/1wRE6kk ) that the company's billing delays for the Downtown and Midtown tunnels are unacceptable.

Layne sent a letter on Friday to Elizabeth River Crossings CEO Greg Woodsmall demanding a written plan by Oct. 1 to address deficiencies in the company's tolling system.

Elizabeth River Crossings spokeswoman Leila Rice says in a statement to the newspaper that the company is working to address Layne's concerns.

Rice also says the company is working with its tunnel tolling operator to correct invoicing issues attributed to earlier system problems.
