GREENVILLE, South Carolina — A Greenville County officer has been cleared of shooting and wounding a suspect who approached him with a knife.

Sheriff Steve Loftis said in a news release issued Thursday that Master Deputy Matt May was justified in using deadly force.

Officers were called last month to a domestic problem at an apartment complex. Authorities say an officer spotted a man armed with a knife who ran from the deputy.

Authorities say the deputy caught up with the man and ordered him to drop the knife. Officials say May shot the man after he made threats to harm himself and the officer, then approached.

The suspect was taken to a hospital for treatment.
