MOSCOW — Russian Premier League title rivals Zenit St. Petersburg and CSKA Moscow won to stay on top of the table on Saturday.
Zenit romped to a 3-0 win over Chechen team Terek Grozny, while CSKA edged a 1-0 win over Anzhi Makhachkala to match Zenit with three wins from three games.
Zenit striker Hulk, last season's top scorer, did not make the scoresheet but was a creative force, setting up two goals in four minutes.
Hulk has had a controversial start to the season after saying last month that he faced racism in "almost every game" in Russia, sentiments which divided fans.
On the outskirts of Moscow, CSKA toiled against newly promoted Anzhi, but succeeded in defending a 1-0 lead for almost the entire game.
Defender Mario Fernandes scored the only goal after just three minutes with a fierce shot.
Repeated cases of poor finishing plus a goal-line clearance from Anzhi's Andrei Yeshchenko prevented CSKA from adding to the lead.
Also, Amkar Perm rose to fourth with a 1-0 win over Krylya Sovetov Samara. On Friday, Kuban Krasnodar and FC Ufa drew 1-1.
On Sunday, Lokomotiv Moscow can join the leading duo with a win in the first capital-city derby of the season against Dynamo Moscow.
