Man pleads no contest in case of fatal accident in southeastern Michigan parking lot

ADRIAN, Michigan — An 89-year-old man has pleaded no contest to a charge stemming from the death of a woman trapped between vehicles in a southeastern Michigan store parking lot.

The Daily Telegram of Adrian reports (http://bit.ly/12KRvOc) Thursday that a Lenawee County judge accepted the plea a day earlier from John Ellis of Adrian. A no contest plea isn't an admission of guilt but is treated as such for sentencing.

Ellis was charged with a misdemeanor moving violation causing death. He's scheduled to be sentenced July 24.

Fifty-nine-year-old Linda Guzman died at a hospital in February after being flown from Lenawee County's Madison Township.

Police say Ellis backed his van out of a space and hit a pickup truck, trapping Guzman. According to investigators, he hit the accelerator when he intended to brake.
