Santa Fe woman pleads guilty in case of killing, burning of 75-year-old man

SANTA FE, New Mexico — A Santa Fe woman accused of helping to set fire to the body of the elderly man who had helped raise her has pleaded guilty to a lesser charge.

The Santa Fe New Mexican reports ( that 32-year-old Jeannie Sandoval pleaded guilty Friday to second-degree murder.

Prosecutors say Sandoval was living with 75-year-old George Ortiz at the Luisa Senior Center when he was murdered in October 2012.

Ortiz had been married to Sandoval's now deceased grandmother.

Sandoval told police that her boyfriend, Anthony Yepez, choked and killed him after Ortiz hit her.

Police say the couple then poured cooking oil on Ortiz's body and set it on fire.

Sandoval initially faced first-degree murder and other charges. The plea deal calls for her to testify against Yepez.
