DEMOPOLIS, Alabama — A police sergeant in Demopolis has been fired and charged with domestic assault.

Police Chief Tommie Reese told WBRC-TV (http://bit.ly/1GWLMTm ) that Sgt. Derrick Carter was fired after an internal misconduct investigation.

Reese said Carter was then arrested and charged with assaulting a woman.

Local authorities asked the State Bureau of Investigations to examine the complaint against Carter. Reese said police officers are held to a higher standard, and they must maintain that standard to keep the public's trust.

Carter was released from custody on a $1,000 bond. A working phone listing for Carter could not be found.
