Multiple bids received for beach nourishment project along NC 12 on Hatteras Island

RALEIGH, North Carolina — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will review bids received from contractors to nourish parts of the beach on Hatteras Island.

The Corps opened multiple bids for the project Thursday. Officials with the state Transportation Department says the Corps expects to award a contract by mid-July.

The project is designed to protect an area north of Rodanthe along N.C. 12 known locally as the "S-curves." Storms, including Hurricane Sandy, have severely eroded the area over the years.

The Federal Highway Administration approved Hurricane Sandy emergency relief funds to pay for this project.

Meanwhile, the Transportation Department is considering two bridge alternatives as longer-term solutions for the area.
