Nevada campaign finance bill goes to Assembly after debate over clothes

CARSON CITY, Nevada — A debate over whether buying suits and work attire is proper use of campaign funds threatened to derail a campaign reform bill before it was finally passed by the Nevada Senate.

SB49 pushed by Secretary of State Ross Miller is intended to shed light on gifts and contributions received by Nevada lawmakers and other public officials.

The bill was amended to ease some restrictions deemed onerous by some lawmakers. It now requires candidates to report within 72 any contributions over $2,000 received during Nevada's early voting period.

But Senate Republicans took exception Tuesday to a clause authorizing funds to be used to buy clothes. Minority Leader Michael Roberson dubbed it the "Armani" provision.

Democrats countered that some in Nevada's citizen Legislature do not have the means to buy proper attire.
