New Madrid County shuts down jail, moving inmates elsewhere; no reason given

Share/Save/Bookmark

NEW MADRID, Missouri — A southeast Missouri jail is shutting down for good, but officials aren't saying why.

KFVS-TV (http://bit.ly/1sHTCup ) reports the New Madrid County Commission voted to close the jail. Inmates have already been moved to neighboring Scott County.

President Commissioner Clyde Hawes did not give a reason, but the sheriff's office recently addressed questions about possible black mold at the jail. An environmental company performed testing and the sheriff's department said last month that insignificant levels of black mold were found.
