American Red Cross helps more than a dozen people displaced by apartment fire in Cedar Rapids

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — The American Red Cross is helping more than a dozen people displaced by an apartment fire in Cedar Rapids.

Firefighters encountered heavy smoke and flames during the Monday morning fire at the two-story, four-unit building on the city's southeast side. Authorities say an apartment resident heard a smoke alarm going off, saw smoke and flames and alerted other occupants.

Firefighters say the building received heavy fire and smoke damage on the second floor. The first floor sustained smoke and water damage. There also was damage to the basement and attic.

The 13 occupants who escaped the fire were six adults and seven young children. Three occupants who were not home during the fire also are receiving help.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
