Report clears 3 San Diego police officers who killed crime rampage suspect during shootout

SAN DIEGO — An investigation has cleared three San Diego police officers who killed a crime rampage suspect during a shootout.

U-T San Diego (http://bit.ly/12LIlge ) says the district attorney's office concluded this month that officers acted in self-defense when they shot Philip Hernandez last October.

Hernandez was suspected of a three-day series of shootings, robberies and car fires in San Diego County when he was followed by police. He stopped a van and opened fire with a rifle. Six bullets hit a patrol car with an officer inside but he wasn't hurt.

Other officers returned fire and killed Hernandez.

His wife, 18-year-old Cindy Garcia, is facing trial on charges of conspiracy, carjacking, arson and attempted murder of a peace officer.
