Abingdon council approves funding to repair Barter Theater's leaky roof

ABINGDON, Virginia — Abingdon officials plan to repair the Barter Theater's leaky roof.

Town Council on Monday approved $15,000 for the project. The funding includes $10,000 that had been set aside for a retreat and $5,000 from the council contingency fund.

The town owns the building. Vice Mayor Cathy Lowe tells The Bristol Herald Courier ( ) that the town's lease with the theater requires it to maintain the outside of the building.

The theater was founded during the Depression. When it opened in 1933, the price of admission was 35 cents or the equivalent in produce. Its alumni include Gregory Peck, Patricia Neal and Frances Fisher.
