Northern Mexico police chief 'delicate' after shooting attack

HERMOSILLO, Mexico — Mexican authorities say the police chief of the border town of San Luis Rio Colorado is in grave condition after coming under fire from gunmen.

Sonora state authorities say Francisco Vazquez Bustamante was hit by several bullets in late Monday's attack, including in his legs and head. Witnesses said he was in an unmarked car when he came under attack by men with AK-47 assault rifles.

Vazquez was flown by helicopter to a clinic in Phoenix, Arizona, though officials didn't say which one. Authorities said he was in "delicate" condition.

San Luis Rio Colorado police say they are looking for a black Jetta in the attack.

The town sits on the border with Mexico and southwestern Arizona near Yuma and the California state line.
