HUNTSVILLE, Alabama — Forecasters say as much as 2 inches of snow could fall in northeastern Alabama as wintry weather moves across the state.

The National Weather Service says bands of snow could leave a powdery dusting as far south as central Alabama from Monday night through Tuesday evening.

The weather service issued a winter weather advisory that includes northeastern Alabama and southern Tennessee. Forecasters say 2 inches of snow could fall in the higher elevations around Scottsboro and Fort Payne, and other areas could receive about 1 inch.

Forecasters say motorists could encounter slippery spots on bridges and overpasses, but major metropolitan areas including Birmingham and Huntsville shouldn't have a problem.

Snow showers and flurries are possible as far south as a line extending from just south of Tuscaloosa to near Auburn.
