Authorities: Arizona prison inmate at the Lewis complex in Buckeye dies in apparent homicide

PHOENIX — Authorities say an Arizona prison inmate is dead from an apparent homicide.

State Department of Corrections officials say 63-year-old John Jones died Monday at the Lewis complex in Buckeye.

DOC officials didn't immediately release any details about what happened to Jones.

They say prison staff and medical responders administered CPR to the inmate. He was transported to West Valley Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

DOC officials say an investigation into the death will be led by the department's Criminal Investigation Unit in consultation with the Maricopa County Medical examiner's office.

Jones was sentenced out of Yavapai County and was serving 40 years for sexual assault, aggravated assault and kidnapping. He had been in prison since March 2000.
