Oregon State Police investigate fatal crash near Veneta; 80-year-old man crashed car into tree

VENETA, Oregon — Oregon State Police are investigating a fatal traffic crash along Highway 126 near Veneta.

Investigators say 80-year-old Jerry Byron Howell was driving his Mercedes Benz at about 2:45 p.m. on Friday when the car traveled across the eastbound lane and off the road. The car crashed into a tree.

Local emergency responders extricated Howell from the vehicle. He was transported by ambulance to Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend and reportedly died about two hours later.
