KINGSTON, New York — A 49-year-old man has been sentenced to 25 years to life in state prison for killing a jewelry maker inside her Hudson Valley home earlier this year.
Local media report that Audelis Cruz was sentenced Thursday in Ulster County Court for strangling 45-year-old Anita Jacobs-Royer inside her Kingston home last Feb. 1. Her body was found two days later. Cruz was later arrested in New York City.
Authorities say Jacbos-Royer was trying to help Cruz find a job when he killed her so he could sell her possessions to buy drugs.
Cruz was convicted of second-degree murder last month.
Prosecutors say he had a long and violent criminal history and had been on parole when he killed Jacobs-Royer. He served about 18 years in prison for robbery convictions and was released in June 2012.
