Guimaraes beats Belenenses 3-0 to take overnight lead in Portugal


LISBON, Portugal — Guimaraes beat Belenenses 3-0 to win its third straight game to start the season and take the overnight lead of the Portuguese league on Saturday.

Braga was in second place after holding on to a 2-1 win over Estoril.

Benfica, FC Porto and Rio Ave can all pull level with Guimaraes with wins this round.

Guimaraes' Andre Andre opened with a header in the 26th minute before striker Antonio "Tomane" Fernandes headed the ball home to double the visitor's lead in the 38th.

Alex Goncalves added the third in the 58th with a free kick from a tight angle to beat Belenenses goalkeeper Matthew Jones.

Braga won on goals by Pedro Santos and Portugal forward Eder Macedo.

On Sunday, Benfica hosts Sporting Lisbon in the Portuguese capital derby.
