CHICAGO — A former suburban Chicago associate pastor has been sentenced to ten years in prison for sexually assaulting a minor girl he met through a church-sponsored youth group.

The DuPage County state's attorney's office says 43-year-old Darin Evans worked at the West Suburban Community Church in Elmhurst. A judge sentenced him Thursday after he pleaded guilty to criminal sexual assault.

Prosecutors say Evans assaulted the girl over several years while serving as her youth minister and counselor. They say the assaults began when she was 16 and occurred at several locations, including a church-sponsored retreat. She went to authorities in 2013.

Evans had been out on bail but was taken into custody immediately after being sentenced. He must serve 85 percent of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole.
