Teen killed in crash fleeing NW Indiana police

HOBART, Indiana — Police in northwestern Indiana say an 18-year-old man died in a crash while he was fleeing from an officer.

Lake County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Patti Van Til says a Hobart police officer had tried to stop Christopher Velasquez's car about 3:30 a.m. Sunday, but that the Hobart teen drove off. She says Velasquez drove for about a mile before crashing into a tree.

The Times of Munster and the Post-Tribune of Merrillville report the county coroner's office ruled Velasquez died of blunt force trauma at the crash scene in the city just south of Gary.
