Crews work to restore power after winds black out ¼ million in Michigan; 3 die in icy crash

YPSILANTI, Michigan — Michigan utility crews are working to restore power to the remainder of 248,000 homes and businesses blacked out by a severe pre-winter storm that snarled traffic and caused multiple crashes, including one that killed three children in the Upper Peninsula.

High winds hit Monday as a cold front moved through the Great Lakes. Five p.m. temperatures Tuesday ranged from the upper teens to mid-30s.

DTE Energy Co. says 40,000 of its 180,000 affected customers remained without service at 4 p.m. Tuesday. CMS Energy Co. says 6,000 of its 68,000 affected users remained off line late Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities say a woman slid in front of a tractor-trailer in Menominee County on Monday night, killing her three children.

In Flint, 20 vehicles piled up early Tuesday, closing an Interstate 475-I-69 ramp.
