Florida elections bill criticized for language restricting the use of voter assistors

TALLAHASSEE, Florida — Several groups are criticizing a provision in an elections bill, saying it will make it more difficult for some minority, disabled and elderly voters to cast ballots.

The NAACP, a service workers union, a civil rights group and an organization that represents immigrants held a conference call with reporters Monday about language the Senate put in an elections bill that would restrict the use of voter assistors.

The groups object to a provision that says anyone using someone to assist them in the voting booth must know that person before election day and that no one can assist more than 10 voters per election.

The Senate is set to vote on the bill Wednesday.
