WAUPUN, Wisconsin — Waupun (wah-PAHN') authorities say a fire that killed a man and displaced 17 other tenants started in that man's apartment.

Police Chief Dale Heeringa says 54-year-old Todd M. Conn died in the fire Thursday night. A police officer spent the night in a hospital being treated for smoke inhalation, which he suffered while attempting to save the victim. He was released Friday morning.

While the cause of the fire hasn't been determined, the fire department says there's no evidence suggesting criminal activity.

Fire Chief B.J. DeMaa says a damage estimate was not available Friday, but the building was left uninhabitable.

The Red Cross helped displaced tenants find other places to stay.
