Judge finds Danville man guilty of felony murder and child abuse in death of 1-year-old girl

DANVILLE, Virginia — A Danville man has been convicted of felony murder in the death of an infant girl.

Media outlets report that a Danville Circuit Court judge also found 29-year-old Michael James Gill Jr. guilty of felony child abuse on Wednesday afternoon. A sentencing date hasn't been set.

Kevin Hayes with the Danville Fire Department testified during the bench trial that he found 1-year-old Aleigha Grace Sadler unresponsive at Milam's home after responding to a call on Nov. 20, 2014.

The infant was taken to a hospital, where she died three days later.

The Danville Police Department has said an autopsy determined the cause of death was blunt force trauma.

This story has been corrected to show that defendant's name is Michael James Gill Jr., not Joseph W. Milam Jr.
