FORT WAYNE, Indiana — Authorities say a man was taken to a hospital in critical condition after being pulled from his smoke-filled apartment in Fort Wayne.

Firefighters forced their way into the unit at the Canterbury Green Apartments on the city's north side about 12:30 a.m. Monday.

Fire Department assistant chief Paul Veldman tells WANE-TV that crews found a small fire in the kitchen and discovered the man in the apartment's living room.

The Journal Gazette reports another person and a dog were evacuated by firefighters as they cleared eight apartments. No other injuries were reported.
