NEW ORLEANS — Authorities say a man shot to death by a New Orleans police officer during a December shoot-out was the same gunman in multiple robberies in Orleans and Jefferson parishes since May 2014.
Media outlets report that Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office spokesman Col. John Fortunato says ballistic evidence linked 33-year-old Calvin McKinnis to a series of 10 armed robberies and attempted robberies in both parishes.
Officials say the robberies included holdups at several Wal-Mart stores and McDonald's restaurants.
McKinnis, an Army veteran, was fatally shot during a Dec. 14 traffic stop after authorities say he opened fire on Officer Frederick Carter. Police say Carter's body-worn camera video shows McKinnis fired first. Police haven't released the video.
Fortunato says ballistic testing shows two guns recovered from McKinnis' van matched shell casings in the parishes' cases.
