SUNNYVALE, California — Authorities say a birthday celebration turned tragic after a fatal crash on Northern California freeway has left one woman dead and a man faces possible charges of vehicular manslaughter.

The California Highway Patrol says the accident occurred early Friday when the driver of a Honda Accord traveling northbound on Highway 101 in Sunnyvale lost control while turning on an off ramp and flipped into a ditch.

Sgt. Bret Kwarta says one woman ejected from the car was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and three other passengers were taken to local hospitals with minor injuries.

Kwarta says none of the occupants were wearing seatbelts and they appear to have been intoxicated. Kwarta says they were celebrating one of the surviving victims 23rd birthday.

Their names have not been released.

The off ramp reopened shortly after 6:30 a.m.
