NEWBURY, Vermont — A Vermont man is accused of illegally setting a trap to catch a neighbor's dog, then shooting the pet.
Richard Martin of Newbury has been ordered to appear March 19 in Vermont Superior Court in Chelsea to face a charge of cruelty to animals and four counts of illegal trapping. It wasn't immediately known if he had a lawyer.
Amy Emerson reported Tuesday her dog had gone missing. She followed the animal's tracks to her neighbor's property. She found the body of her dog, which had been caught in a trap. The dog was shot and killed.
Game Warden Mark Schichtle and State Trooper Chuck Schulze responded to Emerson's complaint and developed enough evidence to lead them to issue the 45-year-old Martin a court citation.
