Authorities say Clayton man charged with hit-and-run in death of 13-year-old Wendell boy

RALEIGH, North Carolina — Authorities say a Clayton man has been charged in the hit-and-run death of a 13-year-old boy waiting for a school bus at his home.

Multiple media outlets report 28-year-old Efren Vences was in court on Wednesday, and he apologized for the death of Keith Jones. Vences is charged with felony hit-and-run and misdemeanor death by a motor vehicle.

The N.C. Highway Patrol said Jones was standing near the roadway at his home around 7 a.m. Tuesday when a burgundy Ford Crown Victoria struck him. The patrol said Jones, who attended Wendell Middle School, was taken to Wake Medical Center, where he died.

Vences, who posted a $50,000 bond, waived his right to a court-appointed attorney, and the judge set his next hearing for Oct. 15.
