Charlotte airport director supports plant to shift control from city to authority

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina — The director at Charlotte Douglas International Airport says he supports switching control of the airport from the city to an independent airport authority.

Jerry Orr said Monday he thinks the airport should be run by an authority.

Orr had previously said he thought the airport could be run more effectively by an authority rather than the city. Then-interim city manager Julie Burch told Orr in February not to lobby for the switch.

Orr said he decided to speak out directly because he was tired of other people defining him..

Mecklenburg Sen. Malcolm Graham said Orr should be fired for supporting the change. The Democratic senator has opposed taking the power from the city.

Current city manager Ron Carlee said he would not talk about Orr's position.
