SALT LAKE CITY — Utah's unemployment rate dropped slightly in December to 3.5 percent.

Numbers released by Utah's Department of Workforce Services on Friday show the Utah rate remains well below the national jobless rate at 5.6 percent last month.

About 49,900 Utah residents were out of work and seeking jobs in December.

Workforce Services says that's the first time since the recession began that the number of unemployed job seekers in Utah dropped below 50,000.
