ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico — Parts of central and northern New Mexico have received what meteorologists say is a record-breaking snowfall with more expected Saturday.

The National Weather Service says a "snow band" developed over Albuquerque and Santa Fe, leading to as much as 1 inch of snow per hour for several hours.

Officials are warning motorists to stay off roadways Saturday because of difficult driving conditions as a result of stormy winter weather.

Albuquerque police said Friday they have been getting a high volume of traffic accident calls. As a result, they will not be responding to any unless injuries are involved.

Albuquerque and Rio Rancho closed public schools Friday due to highways and roads around the state covered with ice and snow.

The Weather Service says the two-day snowfall accumulation as of 5 a.m. at the Albuquerque International Sunport was 8.6 inches, the 9th heaviest since 131.

Meteorologists say the last time more than 8 inches fell in a two-day period was 2006.
