ROSEBURG, Oregon — A Southern Oregon man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for killing a man while tying him up to steal his medical marijuana.

The News-Review reports that 28-year-old Buford Thomas Harper of Canyonville was sentenced Monday in Roseburg after pleading guilty to murder in the death of 57-year-old William Joe Bruton of Tri City in October 2013.

Four others accused in the case are being tried separately.

Harper told detectives he put Bruton in a choke hold while struggling to tie him up. When he realized Bruton was no longer breathing, Harper said, he tried CPR but could not revive him.
