MARTINSBURG, West Virginia — The Berkeley County Board of Education has fired a teacher who is facing sex charges involving a student.

Erin Steve Thomas had been on administrative leave without pay since he was charged this summer.

Berkeley County Schools Superintendent Manny Arvon tells The Herald-Mail (http://bit.ly/1Ey4nGP) that the school board voted last week to terminate Thomas' employment as a teacher at Hedgesville High School.

The 31-year-old Thomas is charged with third-degree sexual assault and computer harassment. He's scheduled to appear at a preliminary hearing in Berkeley County Magistrate Court on Oct. 22.

Thomas is accused of having a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old female student.
