CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The state Broadband Deployment Council says it needs to know providers' expansion plans in the state before it hands out grants for projects in rural areas.
The Charleston Gazette (http://bit.ly/JV0qR0 ) reports that the council is asking telecommunications companies to submit their expansion plans within 60 days.
Council member Lee Fisher said at a meeting Wednesday that the council doesn't want to award funding that duplicates projects.
The council hopes to begin distributing $4 million in grant funding in December.
Providers say they're willing to cooperate with the council but the information must remain confidential.
