Car racing reported in Gambrill State Park near scene of fatal crash in Frederick County

FREDERICK, Maryland — Frederick County authorities are investigating reports of cars racing in Gambrill State Park just before a fatal crash over the weekend.

The sheriff's office says there were recent reports of racing on Gambrill Park Road, including on the night of the crash.

Officials say 20-year-old Daniel Swader of Gaithersburg died in the crash in the 8800 block of Gambrill Park Road about 1:30 a.m. Sunday. Authorities say Swader was driving southbound on the road when his vehicle drove on to the southbound grassy shoulder, came back onto the road and spun into a tree on the northbound side of the road.

A passenger in the car was not injured.

Investigators are trying to determine if Swader was involved in racing at the time of the crash.
