MOORE, South Carolina — A youth minister at a Union church has been killed after he was thrown from a vehicle in a wreck and then struck by a hit and run driver.

Local media outlets reported that 25-year-old Jemel Hillard Lawter was a passenger in a pickup truck pulling a trailer that wrecked on Interstate 26 in Spartanburg County early Monday.

Lawter was youth pastor at Morningside Baptist Church. Pastor Aulbrey Calvert said Lawter and the truck driver, 48-year-old Timothy Dan Holden of Spartanburg, were going hunting when the wreck happened.

Highway Patrol Cpl. Bill Rhyne said both men were thrown from the vehicle and Lawter was struck by another vehicle that did not stop.

Holden was in serious condition at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Neither man was wearing a seat belt.
