BOWIE, Texas — Two people are dead in a plane crash in rural North Texas.

Department of Public Safety spokesman Tony Fulton said Friday that 51-year-old Lawrence Liptack of Manvel and 10-year-old Landon Liptack died when their twin-engine Cessna plane crashed into a field and caught fire about six miles northeast of Bowie. The call came in at 3:40 p.m.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Lynn Lunsford had said in an email earlier Friday that initially law enforcement had informed them of three victims. DPS later changed that to two. Fulton said he did not know where the higher figure originated.

It's not yet clear what caused the plane to crash about 100 miles northwest of Dallas.
