24-year-old man sentenced to 6 years in prison for hit-and-run death of toddler in Decatur

DECATUR, Illinois — A 24-year-old man was sentenced to six years in prison for the death of a 19-month-old Decatur boy who was killed in a hit-and-run crash last summer.

David W. Overlin was sentenced Thursday and ordered to pay $2,000 in restitution.

He pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an injury accident, which is a felony, in February.

Overlin faced up to 15 years in prison for the crash that killed Zyonne A. Cooper.

The boy died after being hit by an SUV when he wandered into a street just after midnight last June. Authorities say Overlin changed the license plates on his Ford Explorer and then tried to sell the vehicle after the crash.

During Thursday's hearing, Overlin apologized.
